The Liberty flying car from Dutch manufacturer PAL-V has taken a significant step towards commercial availability, following the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s (EASA) approval for producing its aviation components. This approval permits the company to begin manufacturing the aircraft-related parts of the innovative three-wheeled vehicle, which combines both road and air travel features. The next critical milestone for PAL-V is obtaining full certification for the Liberty as an aircraft, a process expected to be completed by 2028, enabling it to legally operate in the skies.
Distinguished by its hybrid design, the Liberty integrates a retractable rotor and propeller into a conventional car framework. While it functions like a typical car on roads, its rotor system can be deployed for flight. Unlike helicopters, the Liberty requires a runway for both takeoff and landing and cannot lift off vertically. The vehicle’s operation necessitates both a driving license and a pilot’s license, highlighting its dual functionality. On roads, it can achieve speeds of up to 160 km/h, and when airborne, it boasts a flying range of approximately 500 kilometers.
The Liberty’s starting price is set at around €299,000, excluding taxes and additional costs. Despite its premium price point, PAL-V reports robust demand, claiming that the first 250 vehicles have already been sold. Notably, among the buyers are units ordered by the Dutch fire brigade, indicating strong interest across various sectors. This early consumer engagement underscores the anticipated market potential for personal air vehicles as urban mobility solutions advance.
With the EASA’s recent approval, PAL-V is now positioned to advance towards the final stages of development and certification. Achieving full aviation certification will pave the way for the Liberty to enter the marketplace, potentially transforming transportation by offering a new dimension of travel. If all goes according to plan, the skies could see the introduction of PAL-V’s flying cars by 2028, marking a new era in personal transportation.
