Italy and Allies Condemn US Sanctions Against International Criminal Court

In a concerted stand against the United States’ recent announcement of sanctions, Italy and seven other nations have expressed their unwavering support for the International Criminal Court (ICC). The foreign ministers of Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom jointly issued a statement underscoring their commitment to the ICC’s independence, impartiality, and integrity.

The ministers voiced strong disapproval of the US’s planned sanctions, emphasizing the potential negative impact these measures could have on the court’s operations. They warned that such sanctions might hinder the ICC’s ability to function effectively, affecting its staff and their families as well.

The joint declaration also reiterated these countries’ dedication to a rules-based international order and the promotion of accountability for serious international crimes. The eight nations expressed concern that the US sanctions could undermine the court’s mission to deliver international justice by potentially impeding its responsibilities.

This development highlights the ongoing tensions between the ICC-supporting countries and the United States, which has been critical of the court’s investigations and decisions in the past. The collective statement from the eight nations reflects a broader concern about maintaining the ICC’s role in upholding international justice and the repercussions of actions that could threaten its mandate.
