Luxembourg City Plans CCTV Expansion in Response to Security Concerns

Luxembourg City is planning to enhance its video surveillance capabilities by installing additional CCTV cameras in the city centre. Mayor Lydie Polfer has officially sought approval from Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden to proceed with this expansion, which has already received preliminary backing from the municipal council. However, specific details regarding the number and precise placement of the cameras remain undetermined.

The decision on the final locations for the CCTV cameras will be made following an assessment by the police, who will evaluate security needs and identify priority areas. Mayor Polfer acknowledged the limitations of CCTV in preventing all crimes but emphasized its value in aiding police investigations by helping to identify suspects and reconstruct criminal incidents.

Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer highlighted previous expansions of video surveillance in the Gare district and Bonnevoie, implemented in response to increasing security demands and reported offences. He stressed the city’s commitment to equipping law enforcement with the necessary resources to perform their duties effectively.

This proposal aligns with calls from local business owners and residents who are advocating for heightened security measures to tackle issues such as pickpocketing and other offences. Supporters of the initiative believe that CCTV footage could play a crucial role in assisting police investigations and act as a deterrent to potential criminals by making surveillance more visible.
