Keir Starmer has downplayed fresh speculation about a possible leadership challenge from Andy Burnham, praising the mayor’s work and calling on MPs to stop spreading rumours.

Burnham reignited attention after avoiding a firm answer regarding his long-term leadership intentions. His comments emerged as Labour prepares a budget that could shape political fortunes.

During remarks made en route to the G20 summit, Starmer stressed his strong working relationship with Burnham, particularly during the recent crisis in Manchester. He said they communicated closely throughout.

Starmer criticised reports that pointed to Wes Streeting as a potential challenger, saying such gossip only weakens the government’s ability to deliver for the public. He insisted the cost-of-living crisis should remain the top priority.

Burnham, while promoting his £1bn growth plan, reiterated that he has not launched any leadership bid. He left open the possibility of seeking a parliamentary seat, likely in the north-west.
