Anthropic has pledged to grant independent third-party evaluators permanent, employee-level access to its systems. This move is intended to facilitate the assessment of safety measures, incident reporting, and model alignment evaluations.
Amodei acknowledges the substantial benefits AI could offer humanity but warns that commercial competition might drive companies to prioritize speedy advancements over safety. He emphasizes the growing risk of recursive self-improvement, where AI systems could potentially enhance their capabilities at a rate that outpaces the understanding and control of researchers. Amodei’s concerns echo those of former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who previously highlighted the severe risks posed by increasingly sophisticated AI if safety issues are not adequately addressed.
Support for Amodei’s proposal has come from various quarters, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Altman commended the idea of independent evaluators having access akin to that of employees and indicated that OpenAI would adopt a similar strategy.
