Italy Provides Fuel Aid to Truckers, Farmers, and Fishers Amid Protests

Amid rising fuel costs, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced a new financial aid package aimed at assisting truck drivers, farmers, and fishers. The decision follows disruptive trucker protests in southern Italy, which have led to delivery delays and shortages in markets and shops. Meloni emphasized the importance of maintaining supply chains and warned against the illegal blockades and intimidation tactics being used, which she stated would not be tolerated.

The government respects the right to peaceful demonstration, Meloni noted, but also has the responsibility to enforce law and ensure the smooth movement of goods. She has tasked Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi with addressing requests from transport, farming, and retail associations to maintain supplies to businesses and consumers.

In addition to the newly approved assistance, the government is continuing financial support for road transport associations, which was already in place. Meloni highlighted the government’s commitment to preventing price speculation that could exacerbate the impact of supply disruptions on households and businesses.

Meloni condemned the actions of protestors who have resorted to threats and damage to trucks, emphasizing that such actions are forms of intimidation rather than legitimate protest. She stated that authorities would utilize all available legal measures, including criminalizing road blockades, to address these issues.

Furthermore, Meloni stressed that the greatest burden of disrupted transport networks falls on ordinary citizens, workers, and businesses. She reaffirmed the government’s ongoing engagement with peaceful protesters, while also working on solutions to the rising fuel costs and ensuring the protection of essential supply chains.
