Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with a strong message condemning gender-based violence and urging continued national commitment to combating it. She described violence against women as an attack on everyone’s freedom and stressed that it remains an intolerable issue that must be confronted without hesitation.
Meloni highlighted the government’s recent efforts, including stricter penalties, expanded prevention measures, and improvements to the “red code” system that accelerates legal procedures in cases of gender-based violence. She noted that funding for shelters and anti-violence centers has doubled, while financial support for victims and awareness programs have also been significantly strengthened.
The prime minister emphasized that progress has been made but insisted that more must be done to protect, prevent and support women at risk. She called for a society where no woman feels alone, unheard or unsafe, underscoring that safeguarding women’s dignity and freedom is both a state obligation and a collective responsibility.
