Among over 1,000 participants during the 2024 presidential election, those who received feeds with slightly more anti-democratic and partisan content showed increased feelings of sadness and anger after just one week. These emotional effects accompanied but extended beyond simple polarization, suggesting that algorithmic choices harm mental health while increasing political division.
The emotional dimension helps explain why algorithmic polarization proves so powerful. Cognitive attitude changes can be rationally evaluated and potentially resisted. But emotional manipulation operates below conscious reasoning, triggering visceral responses that bypass critical evaluation. When people feel angry, they become less capable of calm deliberation. When they feel sad, they may disengage entirely.
This emotional architecture also explains engagement optimization’s polarization effects. Content that makes people angry or sad generates strong reactions that boost engagement metrics. Platforms optimizing for engagement therefore systematically amplify content triggering these emotions. The fact that such content also increases polarization represents, from an engagement perspective, a feature rather than a bug.
Addressing emotional manipulation requires recognizing it as distinct from simple misinformation or bias. Content can be factually accurate yet emotionally manipulative. Algorithms can amplify entirely authentic posts yet still cause emotional harm through selective emphasis of anger- and sadness-inducing content over more emotionally neutral material. Interventions focused only on factual accuracy may miss this emotional dimension driving much algorithmic harm.
