Singapore and Luxembourg are exploring avenues to deepen their collaboration in cutting-edge fields such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and space and satellite communications. This initiative is part of efforts to enhance the robust partnership between the two nations. Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, noted that as small states with limited domestic markets and natural resources, both countries have leveraged their openness and international connections to become prominent financial and business centers serving larger regional markets.
Highlighting the strong economic ties, Wong pointed out that Luxembourg is the largest investor from the European Union in Singapore, while Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU. Both countries are also keen on bolstering the relationship between ASEAN and the European Union. Wong emphasized that Singapore and Luxembourg are aligned in their support for regional integration and are committed to maintaining an open, rules-based international environment.
Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Luc Frieden, is currently visiting Singapore from September 6 to 8, where he also met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their discussions focused on geopolitical developments and strategies for promoting stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law. The visit coincides with the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Luxembourg. The recent establishment of Luxembourg’s first resident embassy in Singapore is seen as a strong indication of its dedication to expanding engagement with Singapore and the broader region.
During his visit, Frieden is scheduled to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, where he will address the theme of Europe’s role and autonomy in the evolving global landscape. This lecture is anticipated to offer insights into how Europe can navigate the changing dynamics on the world stage.
