Vietnam and Switzerland are aiming to deepen their longstanding friendship and expand cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, innovation, and science and technology. This commitment was emphasized during an event in Bern marking Vietnam’s National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Speaking at the event, Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President Nguyễn Thị Thanh underscored the importance Vietnam places on its relationship with Switzerland. She highlighted Switzerland’s support during pivotal moments in Vietnam’s history and noted the progress in bilateral ties in politics, trade, investment, education, science, and technology, as well as innovation and cultural exchanges. Thanh reiterated Vietnam’s goal of enhancing cooperation by building on political trust and traditional friendship, while also expanding economic ties and collaboration in areas where Switzerland has expertise and Vietnam is developing.
Economic collaboration is a cornerstone of the Vietnam-Switzerland relationship, with annual trade exceeding $2 billion. More than 100 Swiss companies operate in Vietnam, investing in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, precision machinery, and watchmaking. This robust economic partnership has been a significant factor in the growth of bilateral relations.
Swiss Senator Mauro Poggia also highlighted the significant expansion of cooperation since Vietnam initiated its economic renewal. He acknowledged Switzerland’s ongoing support for Vietnam’s economic transformation and sustainable development efforts.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Châu Mai Anh pointed to the establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership in 2025 and the successful conclusion of negotiations between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association on a free trade agreement as important milestones. These developments are seen as enhancing bilateral relations and creating further opportunities for cooperation in innovation, digital transformation, sustainable development, finance, and human resource development.
