WhatsApp Introduces Usernames, Aiming to Enhance Privacy and Boost User Engagement

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows users to engage in conversations without having to reveal their phone numbers. This privacy-oriented update is set to be rolled out globally later this year. Ahead of the full launch, users have the opportunity to reserve a unique username, which they can eventually use to start conversations, sharing their username instead of their phone number.

To access this new feature, users need to update their WhatsApp app and navigate to Settings, then Account, and finally Username. The company has assured that notifications will be sent to users when the feature becomes available in their specific regions. Unlike other social media platforms, WhatsApp will not be providing a public directory for username searches. This means only those who know the exact username will be able to initiate contact, a measure aimed at reducing spam and unwanted messages.

The platform is also introducing an optional username key, which users can share to have more control over who can start a chat with them. Importantly, the use of usernames will remain an optional feature. Users who prefer the traditional method can continue initiating conversations using their phone numbers.

This update is particularly beneficial for creators, businesses, and organizations looking to maintain consistent identities across various services offered by Meta Platforms. It potentially allows users to reserve matching usernames across different platforms, where available, thus streamlining their digital identity management.
