Donald Trump’s repeated comparisons between London, Paris, and their past iterations have drawn sharp criticism for implying that diversity has damaged these global cities. The president’s rhetoric comes as he simultaneously pressures Ukraine to accept territorial concessions to Russia.

Trump’s proposed Ukraine peace framework would force President Zelenskyy to cede territory to Russia within days. American diplomatic efforts have focused on achieving rapid agreement, with Trump publicly characterizing Russia as holding military advantages. The vague nature of proposed US security commitments in exchange for territorial losses has generated skepticism about whether Ukraine would receive meaningful protection.

The president’s characterization of European cities employed explicitly nostalgic framing that critics interpret as racially motivated. Trump stated: “I loved Paris. It’s a much different place than it was. If you take a look at London… London’s a different place. I love London. I love London. And I hate to see it happen.” His repeated emphasis on these cities being “different” while lamenting changes has been widely interpreted as code for opposition to increasing diversity.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan received some of Trump’s harshest personal attacks, with the president calling him “horrible,” “vicious,” “disgusting,” and “incompetent.” Trump’s attacks on Khan appear directly connected to his criticism of London’s changing character. Khan responded by defending London as a “liberal, progressive, diverse, successful city” while questioning Trump’s obsession.

European leaders have responded with unified rejection of Trump’s characterization. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that Europe can manage its own democratic affairs, while EU officials described the White House approach as provocative interference. Trump’s nostalgic comparisons of major cities, combined with his attacks on diversity, have been particularly controversial. Pope Leo XIV joined political leaders in warning that Trump’s approach threatens the transatlantic alliance.
